Early encounter, discovery and naming … Late evening on Valentine’s Day, 1997. I’m in Cape Town, teaching a weekend on Chiron. I’ve returned to my lodgings to rest and finish preparing material for the next day. As I sip from a cup of tea, I fall gently into a contemplative mood. ‘Something’ seems to be happening. I close my eyes as a palpable and gradually intensifying felt-sense develops … of ‘something’… quiet and delicate but immensely powerful. Infinite but contained, universal but deeply personal. Silently generating and radiating Love. I receive this Being, this luminosity, into my very cells. Awed and grateful, I am deeply enfolded and received, left with the feeling of belonging in this mysterious universe we all inhabit.
I go out on to the balcony and look out at the familiar African sky, indigo and flushed with stars sparkling diamond-like, just as they did in my childhood. When I would seek out the Southern Cross as I lay on the cool night-grass, looking up and wondering what mysteries were held in the night sky above. I did not realise back then that the Southern Cross lies directly under the belly of Centaurus, the constellation in which the Centaur Chiron was immortalized. Nor did I know about the role that Chiron would play in my life. But I always felt protected, safe, held, inspired. And here I am again, under Centaurus. Although the intensity fades, I feel imbued with this indescribably beautiful energy for many hours into the night and even when I finally fall sleep a couple of hours before dawn.
On February 24th, shortly after I returned to England, the discovery of a new ‘Centaur’ was announced. The first observation had occurred during the very night when I was in Cape Town feeling ‘something happening’! It was given the discovery number of 1997CU26 , then the asteroid number of 10199. I wondered what name would eventually be given, but meanwhile I definitely felt as if the transmitter for “Radio 1997CU26” had already been switched on, and it was just a question of finding this station on the dial, then tuning in to listen!
Within a few hours of Chariklo’s discovery, Jupiter and Uranus made an exact conjunction, rising in Cape Town. The chart for the workshop also featured an almost complete six-pointed star. I recall thinking that if there’d been a planet at around 5° of Leo, it would complete this pattern. Lo and behold! Once ephemerides for 1997CU26 were available … there she was, at Leo 6° 04’!
Chariklo was discovered on February 14, 1997 (February 15, UT) by astronomer Jim Scotti of the Spacewatch team, Arizona. Below is her astounding discovery chart, followed by Dane Rudhyar’s interpretation of the Sabian Symbol for the 7th degree of Leo, her discovery placement, which also seems to directly address my personal experience that night:
.. CHARIKLO DISCOVERED
The six-pointed ‘Star of David’ pattern is uncommon and usually only approximate, so the exactness of the discovery chart is striking: complementary opposites are balanced in tension but with potential awareness and perfect synchrony, joined by a sequence of sextiles. In some traditions this star is associated with the heart chakra, the 'middle ground' of the seven-fold system: three above and three below the heart, the central pivot of the entire pattern, suggesting the union of Heaven and Earth. Who is this Being, quietly birthed in heart-full amazement to us earthlings and clothed in a breath-takingly beautiful horoscope with such perfect geometry?
In alchemy, the six-pointed star represents the “Quintessence” of the Philosopher’s Stone, the combination, essence and transcendence of all four elements whose alchemical symbols are contained within it. Astrologically, in Chariklo’s chart, it joins the sixth degree of all the Air and Fire signs, except Chariklo in the seventh degree of Leo!
The Moon in Gemini is in the 9th house, opposite Pluto in the 3rd is closely applying to trine the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in Aquarius. This is a particular kind of ‘mothering energy’, one which nurtures new understanding, intuitive or perhaps prophetic insight and brings philosophical and metaphysical challenges and also expansion. An endeavor which is smiled upon by benefic Jupiter. Mars and Saturn are in mutual reception from their signs of debility (detriment and fall respectively) across the 1st and 7th house (of partnership), indicating the potential for “mutually assured destruction.” But if these positions are reversed, dignity and exaltation are achieved! This perhaps symbolizes the complete mutual transformation within the relationship of Chiron and Chariklo. In practice, this means including ourselves in the ‘Sacred Space’ mentioned below. Then any resentment, anger and disappointment we might feel at being in the role of ‘The Carer’ can also arise as part of the process, rather than being denied or broadcast, thus creating a ‘stuck place’ or even a definition of ‘how things are’. Called to become ‘Healer to the Healer’ Chariklo accompanied Chiron towards his immortalization in the constellation of Centaurus. This after shape-shifting from naiad to centaur.
With “Radio 1997CU26” as my vibrational compass, I began researching the horoscopes of people whose charts I had read, contemplating the life-stories they had told me and intuitively looking for common themes. When the name of ‘Chariklo’ was chosen in September 1999, the elegant geometry on her discovery chart came alive and immediately began to reveal the eidolon: the ‘Wife of Chiron’! Then an extraordinary number of new clients contacted me, all of whom had very strong Chariklo positions. So I was given, over and over, the opportunity to see her at work in real life.
Not the only one …
I was not the only one to have had an experience of great significance around the date of Chariklo’s discovery. Introducing her to clients, I heard many stories of life-changing decisions, upheavals or experiences that brought forward the Grace and gifts of Chariklo. The most striking of these was recounted by Isabella Kirton. It happened while she was on a vision quest in Puente Alto, Chile, on February 14, 1997 at 09:30 UT. Chariklo was discovered a few hours later as a cascade of words began distilling into the first writings of a book which Isabella had already been called to write. Spirit Child: Healing the Wound of Abortion was published the following year. Moving past controversy and taboo, Isabella explores this theme in a tender and powerful way, describing the personal journey of grief, loss and spiritual awakening which had unfolded after her pregnancy was aborted. In 1999, shortly before Chariklo was named, Isabella and I collaborated on an article which also revealed how the spirit world intersected with her journey, and the intricate astrology which reflected this personal, ancestral and historical process of healing.
Since 1991, Isabella’s natal Sun at 2°04’ Aquarius has seen a long series of conjunctions by transit: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune plus the Centaurs Chiron and Nessus. In 1995, on the eve of her Solar Return, and with Uranus approaching her Sun, Isabella dreamed of the Sun. Recall that the Sun-god Apollo was mentor to Chiron and possibly Chariklo:
Poignantly, during 2021 (the time of this writing), Chariklo makes three conjunctions to Isabellas’s Sun! As if the garment long wrought by the ‘Graceful Spinner’ is now being completed.
Mythology, mystery and meaning …
The Greek name ‘Chariklo’ translates to ‘graceful spinner’. Playing with this phrase, we get “She who spins Grace”. Some people naturally emanate a sense of Grace, and one feels blessed by their presence, aside from anything they might say or do. Chariklo will almost certainly be prominent in their horoscopes. Also, if you don’t know how to spin, the threads get knotted up! Chariklo reveals our inner knots and, given time and care, she helps untangle them so the thread is freed and beautiful cloth can be woven.
Chariklo is unique amongst the astronomical Centaurs, as she is the only one so far who does not cross the orbits of any of the classical planets. She is also the largest known Centaur with the most stable orbit, nestling between Saturn and Uranus, a pair of astrological opposites which frequently accompany intense conflict and polarization. Sometimes Chariklo will reveal the ‘way through’ when the road ahead seems obstructed by the future or the past. To truly transcend something requires our consciousness to expand ‘upwards and outwards’, but also that it roots ‘downwards and inwards’. We are to relinquish the premature externalization of our energy into ‘doing’ or ‘achieving’ until the time is really ripe. Chariklo helps us with this discernment.
In the mythology, we find the classical sources offering scant and contradictory information on Chariklo, raising more questions than answers. This relative ‘invisibility’ is itself significant as she represents something not easily accessed through words and language, and this ‘silence’ also offers us the space for our own imagination to enter her story. (It may also be a reflection of the cultures within which these stories generated.)
Chariklo began her life as one of the Okeanides, a naiad, or fresh-water nymph. Her father was the Titan Okeanos, god of all the waters and origin of the primal, all-encircling seas. With Tethys, he fathered a large number of offspring many of whom, possibly including Chariklo, were fostered by Apollo. Recall that Chiron was rescued by Apollo when abandoned by his mother, the nymph Philyra. One source gives Okeanos and Tethys as the parents of Philyra, who thus becomes the sibling of Chariklo who becomes in turn the aunt of Chiron! Philyra and Chariklo were known to have cooperated harmoniously, co-mentoring the hero Jason. This offers an alternative to the most commonly known version of Philyra’s fate where, rejecting Chiron, her prayer was to become “other than she was”. The gods duly obliged by turning her into a linden-tree, known for its medicinal properties.
We are not told exactly how Chariklo came to be the wife of Chiron. Did she shape-shift, morphing from naiad to centaur? Or was this an interspecies union? Both have rich possibilities for imaginal elaboration. Many of us will know the experience of ‘shape-shifting’ in order to find love – becoming that which we think others want us to be. Conversely, we can be assured that the experience of deep love will initiate a powerful transformational process which may cause all concerned to ‘shape-shift’. A mosaic from the late Roman period illustrates Aphrodite, the goddess of Love, being attended to and crowned by two Centaurides, or female centaurs, barely mentioned in the ancient literature, but occasionally depicted in visual art. Here, we recall that Venus is the overall dispositor of the chart for Chiron’s discovery, shown below, and also Kelley Hunter’s moving phrase for Chariklo: “What best serves love.”
And an ‘interspecies’ union? Joining with a creature who is utterly ‘other’? Getting to know someone intimately, beyond our projections, is to meet the ‘other’, even within our same (human) species! The verb ‘to other’ and its gerund ‘othering’ have relatively recently entered the vernacular: it implies an experience of dismissal, contempt and rejection by an individual or group who has co-opted their own ways to represent what is ‘normal’. From that position, and in the interest of self-preservation, everything and everyone else is seen as ‘other’ in the derogatory sense described above. This ‘othering’ process underpins the many ‘isms’ currently being vociferously discussed: racism, sexism, genderism, ableism, ageism and so on. The suffix ‘ism’, simply describes a practice, a set of principles, beliefs or customs by which a group defines itself. When this becomes loaded with value judgements, to keep out ‘others’ who are different and thus feared, the resulting polarities will be eternally sustained by an endless battle to prove who is right/wrong, good/bad, superior/inferior. And to find someone to blame.
The newly proposed word ‘monsterize’ means to ‘make someone into a monster’. Through perception or action, if we do this over a long enough period of time, the person will ‘comply’ and behave accordingly. An important dimension of our own healing may well be to acknowledge the ‘monstrous’ within ourselves, condemned and loathed, and to invite the Light of Compassionate Understanding to enter this dark space. Indeed, Chiron was ‘monsterized’ by his own mother Philyra at the beginning of his life. Crucially, this ‘monsterizing’ tendency may be introjected, banished to deep regions of the inner shadow that we may disallow through fear and shame. Famous stories of real-life people and also fictional or folk-tale characters remind us that Love heals this wound. ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Elephant Man’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ come to mind as examples of this archetypal theme.
Beyond this ‘monsterizing’ we can understand that destructive attitudes and behavior may result from defensive reactions to pain and trauma that we have not yet been able to process and digest, for whatever reason. So it remains untransformed but continually seeking healing, and may thus give rise to all manner of distortions, addictions and repetitions. Today, there are many fine teachers currently working towards a ‘trauma-informed’ world. This concerns not only individual, but also ancestral, cultural and historical wounds which ask to be witnessed so they can heal. This is the terrain towards which the Centaurs lead us, and since Chiron was discovered in 1977 we can see this understanding emerging in the collective.
Chariklo and Chiron, as husband and wife together, can be seen to attend to the “Wounds Which Makes Us Wise”. Specifically, Chariklo brings the capacity to silently accompany, bear witness and ‘hold space’, which is essential for any healing and transformation to take place. Without this, a proliferation of potentially healing technologies and techniques may have little effect, if any. And, as in the case of modern pharmacology and commodified medicine, may even do harm. This because these have developed within an almost entirely materialistic world-view which sees the body as a machine rather than a living organism – a vehicle for the expression of the sacred, deeply embedded in the cosmos of which it is part.
Below are some key phrases which signify the presence of Chariklo. All were observed in the course of my work and therefore emphasize inner processes and personal life-situations. To find out where she is in your chart, download the Centaur ephemeris bundle. However, best not to fret about ‘what Chariklo means’. Firstly, use the astrology that you already know (house, sign, aspects and transits). Then approach your Chariklo position by engaging your own ‘Earth and Water’ perceptions and impressions through sensation and feeling.
No need to ‘figure out’ anything. Rather look quietly and deeply into your life and your soul and take the time to tune in to “Radio 1997CU26” (Chariklo), as mentioned above! And see what arises.
Sacred space. A space within which our consciousness is elevated and healing can occur. This can be instinctual and natural, or deliberately generated. For example, in any group there is one (sometimes more) person(s) who ‘hold the space’. They may not be one who talks the most, or overtly leads the group, but they caretake the ‘invisible field’ within which the soul-group can flourish. Some notice this gift and choose to develop it, learning traditional skills for preparing a space for group ritual or celebration, and also individual prayer and inner work. This is the necessary temenos, container or alembic within which the ‘work of soul’ is facilitated and held, also including the theme of appropriate boundaries.
To bear witness. To hear, see and feel with another’s story. Having the capacity to not react by imposing one’s own need to ‘fix’ a situation, give unsolicited advice, or take action according to what we think should happen. In other words, to attend silently with our whole being, rather than lapsing into doing. This requires a sacred space, as described above, and is particularly important in the realm of ancestral healing work. We may be invited to witness, understand and empathize with ancestral suffering which is still actively looking for healing. Mending the transgenerational lines of communication is a delicate and mostly invisible work. Chariklo represents a trans-dimensional awareness capable of seeing the threads which connect human life with the spirit world.
To abide with. To be committed for the long haul, whether circumstances are easy or difficult. Hence to be devoted, steadfast, faithful. To accompany. To serve. ‘Being there’ with a simple, caring presence which can make a big difference to someone’s life. The world is full of men and woman who daily (and usually ‘invisibly’) fulfil this task for loved ones who are frail, unwell or in a terminal process, whether or not they are ‘professional healers’. Unsung heroes and heroines. ‘Invisible’ work.
Midwife, doula. Chariklo is a mid-wife, presiding over deep transitions in life: birth, death and many important phases in between. This applies not only to biological events, but also to spiritual and psychological transitions which can occur at any age.
Deep Yin energy. In Taoist philosophy, nature (including the human body) expresses a fundamental duality: Yin and Yang. The well-known diagram of the Tao is typically a circle divided by an ‘S-shaped’ line. One side is colored black, the other white, but each contains a small circle of the opposite color. Taken sequentially, the ‘seed’ of one develops into the culmination of the other. It depicts a whole, a dynamic totality which includes both. This is the sort of inclusive vision to which the Centaurs call us, embodying two different species as they do. And perhaps Chariklo, as the ‘graceful spinner’ has a crucial role in the process of generating a transcendent unity.
Chariklo and Chiron
In the discovery chart of Chiron, we see another Star of David, almost complete but featuring Earth and Water to complement Chariklo’s Fire and Air. So many references to wholeness, completeness, exchange and complementarity in this celestial couple!
Perhaps we could see Chiron and Chariklo each helping the other find the beauty and strength of these polarities as together they co-mentor a long list famous heroes: Hercules, Jason, Achilles, Asclepius and others. Understanding more and more deeply the interchange between Yin and Yang can be helpful for complicated issues to do with gender, sexual identity and indeed relationships in general, as Yin and Yang are primal energies not exclusively related either to our biology or our social conditioning. As we mature spiritually, our destiny might include partnering with someone who provides the balance of complementary opposites. Or we may ‘fly solo’ and therefore need to seek this balance within. Culturally, we can see our present time as one of re-balancing: for thousands of years, the Yang force has dominated, contributing strongly to the multiple crises we face today, as mentioned in the words of Anne Baring, above.
In Chiron’s discovery chart, Saturn in Leo is the fiery ‘odd one out’ of a potential Grand Trine in Earth, moving towards the position of the fixed star Regulus, then at 29°01’ of Leo. In “Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars” we read that each of the four Royal fixed stars brings success, honor and renown, but is also associated with a ‘fatal flaw’ which needs to be overcome, lest it herald our downfall. With Regulus, this potential nemesis is vengeance. Breaking the ‘law of talion’ is an essential inward endeavor during a healing process.
This means being aware of the archaic instinct to ‘do unto others as they did to you’ and instead of acting it out, working it through in such a way that transformative energy is released and intercepts the vicious cycle. Note that both Saturn and the Moon are in detriment in Chiron’s discovery chart, and the lack of aspect between them obstructs what would otherwise be a Star of David. This Moon-Saturn poignantly reflects not only Chiron’s original wound of being rejected by his mother, but also the healing process of caring for others even while wounded himself. We can see Chariklo involved in Chiron’s destiny through both themes.
Another encounter …
In early 2017 I was contacted by Suzette, with whom I’d spoken before. She and her husband Ole are both healers who ran a successful multi-disciplinary holistic clinic, originally founded in Denmark. In 1997, around the date of Chariklo’s discovery and on a strong impulse, they relocated the clinic to Spain. Suzette and Ole were born just eleven months apart and therefore share numerous features of their respective horoscopes: the conjunction of Chiron and Pluto in Leo, plus similar placements of Uranus and Neptune, the latter being conjunct Chariklo in the 8th house for both. Most importantly, however, both have Ascendants in Capricorn – Suzette 19°44’ and Ole 20°36’. Being fluent with astrology, Suzette had noticed Pluto already on her own Ascendant and on its way to Ole’s Ascendant. She had become very anxious and afraid that he was going to die, as he had been ill and she was caring for him.
SUZETTE VAN HAUEN-DRUCKER
As Suzette’s session approached, I wondered what on earth I could possibly say to address her anxiety and fear. I noticed an opposition between the transiting Moon and Uranus, across the 3rd and 9th houses – it had become exact during my pre-session meditation which had included prayers for help about Suzette’s focus, specific and urgent. I felt intrigued and curious, wondering how this might be reflected, what surprising words might be spoken or understanding be given. About an hour into the session, I suddenly felt the presence of Chariklo, as fresh as my experience twenty years before. This attunement helped me to ‘see the obvious’ – that Suzette was living the story of Chariklo, caring for her husband, a ‘Wounded Healer!
CHARIKLO MOMENT
In Suzette’s chart, natal Chiron is exactly conjunct Chariklo’s discovery position, within 3’ of arc! Plus, Chariklo joins her large stellium of planets in Virgo in the 8th house, which includes the North Node. This resonates with her life-story, which has included surviving a lot of trauma and personal crisis, from birth onwards, and also highlights her capacity to work with patients in crisis or transition, even to a terminal process. Chariklo was near perihelion when Suzette was born, reflecting the deeply individual and personal quality of Suzette’s connection with her. [Note that in Chariklo’s discovery chart, the Sun in Aquarius is conjunct Suzette’s Moon which is square Saturn, a ‘mother theme’ echoed in Chiron’s discovery chart, as mentioned.] And here, the interception of the sign of Virgo in the 8th house signals the invisibility of this intense soul-work with herself and others.
In that ‘Moment’, Chariklo was applying to the first of three exact conjunctions with Pluto (exact in 2019), which immediately preceded the Saturn-Pluto conjunction of January 2020. There followed a single conjunction with Saturn, to remain within close orb until March 2021. Moreover, Chariklo by transit was then in Suzette’s 12th house, moving to conjunct her natal Pholus, and accompanying the transit of Pluto as it wove to and fro across her Ascendant. Further, there are many exact contacts between this ‘Moment’ chart and the discovery charts of both Chiron and Chariklo. Most notable, perhaps, is that on that day Mercury (4°42’ Rx Taurus) was closely conjunct Chiron’s discovery degree (3°49’Rx Taurus), and opposite Chariklo’s Chiron position when she was discovered (2°05’Scorpio). “Message received.” (Mercury!)
To say that we were both amazed would be an understatement. We were electrified! Suzette remarked, “This is not only about me.” Both of us had the sense that Chariklo had ‘sent a message’ to remind us that she would be there throughout any forthcoming Saturn-Pluto challenges, and that she could always be found in the ‘invisible quiet’. I was already scheduled to record a ‘Centaur conversation’ a few days later, with Eric Francis of planetwaves.net – a perfect opportunity to speak of this Chariklo event. I contacted Suzette to ask whether I might do so. She replied by telling me that she knew Eric, as it was he who’d suggested that she contact me! In her typically generous manner, Suzette gave me permission to use her name and anything about her life-story. Notably, Suzette’s Nessus is in the very same degree where Chiron was discovered, within one degree of Mercury’s position in the ‘Moment’ chart! The Sabian Symbol for 4° Taurus is “The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow”, making a poignant juxtaposition with the Nessus theme of “The Buck Stops Here”. This perhaps refers to the joy which arises when long-standing ancestral wounds are witnessed and healing begins to arise. Recall, too, that in Canto XII of Dante’s Commedia Divina, Nessus is the centaur who guards the entry to the Underworld. In Suzette’s own words,
What followed (2017 onwards) was a long series of unsought opportunities to share this story with others, in conferences and astrological meetings, live and online. Ahead of time, I would let Suzette know the date, time and location of my presentation, and invite those attending to send healing prayers, if they felt to do so. Suzette reported back that both she and Ole were aware of this healing energy and of receiving its benefit. The response of people who attended the presentations demonstrated that Chariklo had spoken to their hearts too. Powerful emotional reactions flowed: of recognition, excitement, gratitude and wonder. And often tears. All of us were touched by this energy… awakening together to the ‘New Story’.
Wedding Rings
In 2013, rings were discovered around Chariklo! She nestles ‘on the edge’ between Saturn and Uranus, who are flanked in turn by Jupiter and Neptune. In 2015, possible rings were also discovered around Chiron, although not yet confirmed. Astronomical science aside, the idea of two Centaurs exchanging wedding rings is too delightful for me, at least, to wait until the latter is confirmed or denied, especially as Chariklo was discovered on Valentine’s Day!
This brings to mind the Tao symbol, above. Imaginally, we can see Chariklo as the Yin (black) half, and Chiron as the Yang (white) half. But note that each contains a ‘seed’ of the other. Chiron, the publicly-esteemed mentor and healer, fostered by the sun-god Apollo and accidentally wounded by Hercules, is represented by the Yang (white) half, ‘seeded and completed’ by the presence of the small Yin circle which refers to his wound, and also to Chariklo. And vice versa: the Yin (black) half of Chariklo is ‘seeded and completed’ by Chiron. As in the “New Story”, each seeking and eventually becoming whole alongside the other, alternatively and together. The One becomes the Two, enabling the Two to become One. ____________________________________________________________
